Day 9: Saturday 28 September - Tokyo#2

Today was a very active day with lots of walking, stairs and subways! We viewed the city from the Metropolitan Government Building, navigated the popular shopping place at Takeshita Street famous for its delicious crepes in Harajuku, visited the Meiji Jingu shrine where we saw a traditional wedding take place, prepared our own Okonomiyaki for lunch, and walked the very busy crossing at Shibuya Station. We were ready for a good rest by the end of our sightseeing day!

Day 6: Wednesday 25 September - Shonai Excursion

Together with the students of Shinjo’s International Relations Committee, today we took a bus trip to the seaside town of Shonai located on the west coast of Japan. Here we visited a candle making store where we hand-painted our own candle. We then headed to the “Kamo Aquarium” located on Shonai Beach facing the Sea of Japan. This extraordinary aquarium is world famous for having the largest number of jellyfish exhibits. On return to Shinjo, we participated in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

DAY 1 & 2. Konnichiwa from Japan

Konnichiwa! While it has been two long days of travel since we farewelled our families in Townsville early on Friday morning, this afternoon we all arrived safe and sound to our home city for the next week, Shinjo in the Yamagata Prefecture.  Our morning began with a traditional Japanese breakfast of steamed rice, miso soup, grilled fish, pickled vegetables, and some adventurous foodies tried  natto  - a pungent, slimy, sticky and stringy fermented soybean dish. We had time to explore Japan’s largest and busiest train terminal – Tokyo Station, where we purchased bento boxes for lunch during our journey to Shinjo.  Following a three hour trip on the bullet train from Tokyo station, we were greeted with a very warm and friendly welcome at the Shinjo train station by the students, parents and teachers of Shinjo East High School.  With a mix of excitement and nerves, our students met with their host families to begin their homestay experience.

Day 10: Sunday 29 September - Tokyo #3

Today we visited the high-tech entertainment hub on the artificial island of Odaiba. First, we explored and interacted with hands-on science-related topics at the  National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation - the Miraikan. Lunch was at the Venice-themed Venus Fort Mall, followed by time exploring the area including the Toyota Showroom. We spent the afternoon at the Mori Digital Art Museum - a mesmerizing display of lights and colours. We even created our own sea-themed artwork which was scanned and projected onto a moving replication of the ocean. Our day was completed with a group dinner of fries and burgers  at Mos Burger. With weary legs, we returned to our hotel for an early night to get a good rest in readiness for our trip to Disneyland tomorrow!
